Naturfreundehütte Lodge

Naturfreundehütte Lodge

One lodge, two names and amazing views.

At the weekend, nature lovers in the Gesäuse get out there and hike up to the cosy Naturfreundehütte Lodge to enjoy the view of Palfau from high up above.

Naturfreundehütte Lodge also goes by the name of Bergbauern-Lackneralm Lodge and is located at 1,020 metres above sea level. How to get there? Follow trail 283 from Bergbauer farm in Palfau for about one hour. It will take you to this cosy self-catering hut with a dormitory for 16 people. From mid-May to mid-September the lodge becomes a true eldorado for hikers and nature lovers alike.

Round and round.

A particularly popular destination that can be reached from the lodge in a total walking time of 1.5 hours is Gamsstein Peak, which stands at 1,774 metres high. But that’s far from being the only thing to do – there is also a loop trail that will take you from Palfau to the Naturfreundehütte Lodge, atop Gamsstein Peak, to Moaralm Lodge and back to Palfau in six hours. On the way you will come across lots of natural beauties that you might actually fall for.

Great views.

The location of the lodge is also convenient for bikers on the Buchstein tour and offers amazing views of the Salzatal Valley and the Gesäuse Mountains, which always show their friendly side here and greet every single visitor. When returning the greeting make sure to shout out a joyful ‘Hello’ or ‘Griaß di’ in Austrian dialect. But wait, there’s someone else calling for attention – it’s Hochschwab Peak, which can also be seen from the lodge. High up above Palfau at this cosy lodge the world looks pretty darn good.

Ascent:

  • from Palfau, starting point Bergbauer farm, on trail no. 283, 1 h

Transition / Tour / Summits:

Steep canyons, impressive rock formations and colourful vegetation – this is what the backdrop of the Salza River looks like, as the water noisily meanders through the natural landscape and the famous conglomerate ravine. The best way to get to know this emerald-green beauty is to get into a raft or kayak and learn how to use those paddles. Enjoy an exciting adventure on one of the last wild rivers in Europe.

Wasserlochklamm Gorge

Wasserlochklamm Gorge

A highlight of the region is the hike through Wasserlochklamm gorge to the unpredictable water hole. The ingredients are: a suspension bridge, four wooden staircases and bridges, five waterfalls and a breath-taking view of the Salza. Right on top you might even hit the jackpot when the gates at the water hole open up as you are arriving. Sounds dangerous, but is indeed something for the whole family. Don’t miss the baked potatoes and waffles at Wasserlochschenke restaurant.

Archery Trail

We’re back at Eschau Inn because in just a short 5-minute walk from there you will arrive at the starting point of the Archery Club Salzatal’s archery trails. Choose from three different trails. The shortest one will keep you busy for 1 hour and the longest one for 4 hours, although how long it takes also depends on how often you miss the 3D animal figures. The equipment can be rented on the spot and you also receive some brief training.

GeoWerkstatt Workshop Gams

Geology is for crafting.

Nothklamm Gorge

For hot summer days.

The wooden walkway, spanning a total length of 700 metres, takes you floating through the gorge that the roaring Gamsbach Creek has created here. As you go over stairs and bridges you will encounter dripping as well as raging waters. As the gorge is easily accessible from Gams it is a perfect option for those hot summer days when the temperatures are elevated. Make sure to pay close attention, maybe you’ll get lucky and even find a fossil from times gone by.
