GeoRama Gams

The most amazing geology museum of all.

Who would have thought that what is said to be the most amazing geology museum of all is located in Gams? We strongly recommend believing the rumours and having a look for yourself. The museum is not only unique, but also really exciting – trust us, that’s no rumour.

Right in the town centre of Gams, next to the church and Kirchenwirt Inn there’s a museum dedicated to rocks, minerals and fossils – doesn’t sound all too interesting? You will soon be proven wrong – not long after you arrive, your head will be feeling a little bit like a sponge with all the knowledge that you will soak up there, especially when visiting the museum with a guide. Slowly you will also understand why the GeoRama in Gams – that, by the way, forms part of the UNESCO Global Geoparks – is said to be the most amazing geology museum of all. We’d also like to claim that it is the friendliest museum of all too!

Jetstone, say what?

He who knows nothing… should come to Gams, because at the GeoRama they know how to change that. You will learn about jetstone, which was mined in the village some time ago. It is a special type of lightweight carbon that was used to produce jewellery and rosaries. Interesting we say. What else? Well, in the village of Gams 14 different kinds of shells have been discovered so far. Maybe number 15 is up soon?

The GeoRama in Gams is part of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network.

Geology is for crafting.

Nothklamm Gorge

For hot summer days.

The wooden walkway, spanning a total length of 700 metres, takes you floating through the gorge that the roaring Gamsbach Creek has created here. As you go over stairs and bridges you will encounter dripping as well as raging waters. As the gorge is easily accessible from Gams it is a perfect option for those hot summer days when the temperatures are elevated. Make sure to pay close attention, maybe you’ll get lucky and even find a fossil from times gone by.

Geo at heart.

A small village with a long history. And we aren’t talking about hundreds or thousands of years - nope, more like millions of years. Stones, fossils and other finds that you can stumble across even when just going for a walk are proof of the fact that this town is simply steeped in history. And that there’s a lot to learn here, especially when you take a guided tour through the GeoZentrum Centre, hike the GeoPfad Trail, grind stones in the GeoWerkstatt Workshop or visit Kraushöhle Cave or Nothklamm Gorge.
