Weidendom Visitor Centre and Ecological Footprint

The Heart of the National Park.

The Weidendom Visitor Centre sits right in the heart of the National Park at the junction to Johnsbach and is a true oasis in the wilderness. Not only does the ‘living’ building please the eye, but the park itself has so much to offer, for example the exciting theme trails. Lettmaier Au Trail is equipped with adventure stations, Rauchbodenweg Trail offers a marvellous view over the river Enns and the Gesäuse Mountains, and Leierweg Trail is entirely barrier-free. For kids, there's even the ‘Wild John’ theme trail, which centres around a hero with the same name.

Small animals leaving a lasting impression

The most curious visitors can get close to the microcosm by taking a handful of soil or water from the pond and bringing its tiny protagonists into the ‘micro theatre’. Centipedes and water bugs are carefully examined here and are sure to teach you lots of new things.

Something going on

The world’s only walkable ecological footprint is actually a labyrinth, which will teach you a multitude of facts about the environment and how to look after it. The Ecological Footprint received the Austrian Climate Protection Award in 2012. Many different events in the summer, such as Kino unter Sternen (Cinema under the Stars), and in winter, such as the Christmas Market with regional specialities, make a visit here worthwhile.

Hesshütte Lodge

High above the valley at 1,699 metres, the largest and best-known lodge in the Gesäuse is surrounded by the Hochtor Mountain, Planspitze Peak and Hochzinödl Peak. These mountains also happen to be the most popular ones to climb after spending a night at the lodge. The ascents via Wasserfallweg Trail – for experienced hikers only – or via Johnsbach are two of the Gesäuse's classic hiking routes, while the lodge’s host Reini has ensured the lodge has become a real institution over the years.

A Cemetery for Mountaineers.

Johnsbach. A small church stands alone near the edge of the forest. Surrounding it is one of the area’s most well-known cemeteries. In the mountaineering village of Johnsbach people know how to tell a good story, including quite a few tragic ones. At the mountaineers’ cemetery, those who lost their lives in the mountains of the Gesäuse, and indeed the world, are laid to rest. Walking through the remarkably beautiful tombstones and reading the stories they tell is a truly touching experience.
