Buchsteinhaus Lodge

Buchsteinhaus Lodge

Gourmet cuisine high up on the mountain.

It’s the host that makes the lodge and it's Helmut Tschitschko, the manager of the Buchsteinhaus Lodge, who has made it into the legend that it is today. In order to get to this elegant construction, take the winding trail from Gstatterboden that leads through the beech forest. The total walking time is two hours. When you arrive at the lodge there’s nothing else to do but to rest in the sun and browse through the mouth-watering menu. But wait, of course you can also carry on walking...

Freshly prepared meals and tired legs go well together. No matter if you get to Buchsteinhaus via trail 641 (Rauchbodenweg trail) or if you choose St. Gallen as your starting point, the terrace at the modern Buchsteinhaus Lodge is sure to impress. The lodge leaves nothing to be desired and will definitely prepare you for what is yet to come – maybe one of the climbing routes on the south wall, which range from easy to more advanced? But don’t leave the lodge without having witnessed the impressive alpenglow – the view of the Hochtor Mountains is a unique site, especially when the Gesäuse is showing off its romantic sunset ambience.

A great cook wins half the battle.

It’s the cuisine that’s served at Buchsteinhaus that makes the lodge so special for locals and visitors alike. Behind the stove we find ‘Tschitschi’, who gained his cooking skills in Vienna and now uses them up on the mountain. At 10 pm it’s ‘Lights out!’, but no worries, there are comfy dormitories for everyone. After a mix of exercise, crystal clear mountain air and delicious food it’s safe to say that you will enjoy many hours of heavenly sleep.

Hartelsgraben Theme Trail

500 metres of elevation – that’s the hurdle you’ll have to take if you want to get to know the oldest forest road in Styria and if you want to marvel at the cascading waterfalls. By reading the charts along the way you’ll discover the history of logging and of course there are far worse things than hiking in the Hartelsgraben Notch and ending the hike at the beautiful Sulzkaralm pasture.

Sulzkaralm Hut

To be called the most beautiful pasture of a National Park must mean something, right? But how come? Probably because the pasture boasts a lovely lake, a cosy hut and lots of animals, such as marmots, cows and chamois. Or is it because it is conveniently located between Hesshütte Lodge and Hartelsgraben Notch? It doesn’t really matter, all you need to know is that this is a place where you can put up your feet, close your eyes and simply… enjoy!
